Hello Logan parents! How many times have you discovered a bumpy rash or discolored skin on your child and then consulted online sites to discover what it may be? Maybe your toddler has loose stools every time he eats wheat and after scouring all the web articles about bowel movements you decide he has a gluten intolerance. Or maybe your Utah teen has been experiencing headaches so you consult the latest health app on your smart phone.


My name is Adam Green and I am a local Xocai Protein Meal Shake representative based in Logan. One of my passions is advocating for children’s health in Logan, Utah.

I am concerned about the number of Logan parents diagnosing their children’s health using technology instead of consulting their Utah pediatrician. Most Logan parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Logan is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Logan – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes Utah kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Logan kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Logan neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Hello Logan! My name is Adam Green. Welcome to my children’s health blog. I am a local Xocai Protein Meal Shake representative and I am also an advocate for Utah children’s health.

Children are no less prone to headaches than adults. If your Logan child complains of pain in their head don’t ignore it.

Some of the most common triggers for headaches in children are:

Missing meals or dehydration
Getting insufficient sleep
Being under stress
Taking certain medications
Spending too much time in front of a flat screen
Consuming caffeine
Receiving a mild head injury
Infection

Eating certain foods can also trigger headaches for Logan kids and teens. Keeping a food log for your child can help you determine if diet is a factor.

If you are prone to migraines, The National Headache Foundation recommends avoiding nuts, ripened cheeses, herring, pizza, and anything fermented.

Hello! Welcome to the Logan children’s health blog. I am MXI Dark Cacao Consultant Adam Green. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Logan children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Providence area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Providence about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Logan parents should be aware that even young Providence children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

Utah pediatricians can help Logan parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.

One way to ensure your family makes good food choices is to shop and stock your pantry with healthy food in mind. Before you head out to your local Providence super market, sit down and make a healthy shopping list. Even if you are confident that you know what you need, taking the time to write it out will help you plan meals, make healthy choices, and avoid impulse buys.

Once you are in the store, stick to your list and pick up the healthy items first.
